Why Is Solar So Popular? Here are 6 Reasons

Why Is Solar So Popular? Top 6 Reasons

Have you ever wondered why you are hearing more and more about solar power? Or questioned why you are seeing more homes in the area with solar panel systems? There are several reasons for the rise in popularity of solar power over the past few years. To help understand the “why”, our experts at NC Solar Now have compiled a list of the top 6 reasons we believe solar power is growing in popularity!

Renewable Energy Source

Solar energy is a clean, renewable power source that has a minimal impact on our planet and doesn’t emit harmful greenhouse gases. Solar energy is a renewable resource, meaning it won’t ever run out or be in short supply. Solar energy reaches us via the sun’s rays, while fossil fuels come from ancient carbon-rich remains on earth. So, as long as the sun is shining, solar energy will be around.

Lower Production Cost

Over the past ten years, the technology in solar panel development has increased and the price of production of solar panels has decreased. This has allowed solar panels to be more affordable for the average consumer. With the cost of solar panels decreasing more and more, homeowners have decided to take advantage of the benefits that solar panels have to offer!

Lower Energy Bill for Homeowners

Having a solar panel system installed on your home means that you will have a lower electricity bill! Who doesn’t love the sound of that? Simply put, solar panels capture the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity for your home. This allows your home to rely on the sun for its energy source instead of your utility company. Now, this does not mean you cut out the utility company altogether, but you will see a savings in your utility bill, maybe even up to 50% per month.

Little to No Maintenance Cost

Solar Panels require little to no maintenance! The only thing they need is a periodic light cleaning to make sure dirt, leaves, and other debris aren’t obstructing the sun’s rays. A lot of times this light cleaning can happen just by adequate rainfall. Rain and wind can also help clear debris from your solar system. However, during extended periods without rain, it’s important to clean them manually. It is generally recommended that you perform solar panel cleaning between two and four times per year. The good news is that this doesn’t require much work. All you really need is a leaf blower or a quick spray with a garden hose, and your panels will be clean and in top condition.

Increase in Home Value

Having a solar panel system installed on your home can increase your home’s value! Studies have shown that solar installations increase a home’s resale value by up to $6,000 for each kilowatt of solar panels installed, or by about 4.1% of the home’s value. However, this can vary quite a bit from one geographic location to the next, even for comparable homes with similar solar panel systems.

Tax Credit

There is a Solar Investment Tax Credit also called the Federal Solar Tax Credit. This means that for the next two years customers can receive a 26% tax credit. Just how much will that 26% tax credit save you? Let’s say you pay $14,000 for a solar panel system in 2021, you would be eligible for a $3,640 tax credit.

After 2022, the tax credit will decrease to 22%. So if you are thinking about going solar- this may be the year to do it and take advantage of that tax credit!
