Trends in Solar Technology

Keeping Up With Science

Imagine a world where you no longer have to worry about bringing your cell phone charger to work because there is an infinite amount of standby time produced by your photovoltaic glass screen! OR a world where you don’t have to worry about getting gas for your solar-powered car when you are late for that 7 a.m gym class, you have been trying to attend all week.  Rejoice, because that future is closer than you may think!

New solar energy trends are gearing up to take over the market. Some of these promising technologies are already in the advanced stages of development and we can NOT wait to see what the future of solar energy holds.

Transparent Solar Cells Are the Future

Semi-transparent solar cells were developed by a group of researchers at the University of Michigan. The organic solar cell has a transparency of 40% with an efficiency of 10%. While this technology was unveiled in 2017 and isn’t new to the solar community, researchers now think they will be able to fine-tune the semi-transparent solar cell technology to create photovoltaic glass! Imagine a world where your windows serve a multitude of purposes — one being to harness the power of the sun to produce electricity. This cutting-edge solar panel technology will provide a similar electricity-generation potential as rooftop solar, while providing additional functionality to enhance the efficiency of buildings, automobiles, and mobile electronics.

Solar Car Market

Similar to a solar-powered home, solar cars use photovoltaic cell technology to capture energy from the sun. Cars driven by solar-powered motors produce no pollution or CO2 by-products, have a limited carbon footprint and are within our grasp. With an increase in awareness about environmental pollution, climate change, and growth in demand for energy-efficient solutions, the Solar Car Market is predicted to reach 4.08 Million by 2030. According to Allied Market Research, North America is expected to dominate the market and is anticipated to lead the trail throughout the forecast period.

Companies like Toyota and Hyundai are already experimenting with solar panel roofs and testing high-efficiency solar panels on their vehicles. This technology is in the infancy stage, but leaders in the field are working together to advance the innovations so solar becomes common across industries.

Solar Storage Options

The 2020 decade will resonate in the history books as the period where mass solar storage solutions were created and implemented. Solar is already the world’s fastest growing energy technology, so it only makes sense to increase the solar storage options. Battery storage options will give homeowners control to decide what devices receive power and when. Solar batteries are growing in both storage and energy output capabilities to ensure stability in solar as an energy source. As solar energy becomes cheaper and more widely used, the solar + storage movement will only grow to improve management and integrated technology.
