Solar Panels for Your Home Solar System

Exploring Solar Panels Differences

Types of Solar Panels: Which Is Right for Your Home?
With the growing interest in renewable energy, solar panels have become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to reduce their environmental footprint and save on electricity bills. However, not all solar panels are created equal. Each type offers distinct advantages, so understanding the differences can help you make the best decision for your energy needs. Here’s a closer look at the most common types of solar panels on the market and how they compare.

Solar Panels

Which Type of Solar Panel is Best for You?
The best solar panel type depends on your energy needs, roof space, budget, and local climate conditions.

    • Monocrystalline: Best for maximum efficiency and limited roof space.
    • Polycrystalline: Ideal for budget-conscious homeowners with ample roof space.
    • Thin-Film: Great for flexible, lightweight applications or large surface areas.
    • Bifacial: Can harvest solar energy from both sides.  Perfect for increased aesthetics on awnings and carports as well as increased production in reflective environments.
    • PERC: Offers high efficiency, even in low-light or high-temperature conditions.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels (Most Commonly Used)
Monocrystalline solar panels are made from a single, pure crystal structure of silicon, which gives them a high-efficiency rating and sleek black or blue appearance. The process of creating monocrystalline panels involves slicing wafers from a large silicon crystal, making them more expensive to produce. This equipment is currently the most commonly used for residential solar installations.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels
Polycrystalline panels are made by melting multiple silicon crystals together, resulting in a “grain like” pattern, a bluish hue and a lower cost than monocrystalline panels. They are typically less efficient but can still be a great option for many households.  Polycrystalline is the traditional material for solar panels but is becoming less common.  They remain widely used in larger installations because of their lower price point.

Thin-Film Solar Panels
Thin-film panels use a variety of materials, including amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium gallium selenide. These materials are deposited onto a substrate, creating thin, flexible panels that are easy to install on various surfaces. These panels can be “glued” to surfaces or mounted in frames similar to traditional panels.

Bifacial Solar Panels
Bifacial solar panels are designed to capture sunlight from both sides, effectively producing more energy than traditional single-sided panels. These panels are often made of durable materials like glass and are installed at an angle that allows for light reflection from the ground.  They work great in overhead structures such as carports and awnings providing additional energy production and superior aesthetics.

Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) Solar Panels
PERC panels are an advanced form of monocrystalline technology. They use a special layer on the back of the cells to increase efficiency by reflecting unabsorbed light back into the cell, boosting energy production.  These are becoming the de facto choice for solar manufacturers due to the increased efficiency although costing a premium.
