Couple are first in the county to get residential permit for solar
Godwin, NC (July 11, 2014 ) – Tom Jackson and his wife, Jan Mann, are excited about saving money on their electric bill with their new solar array from NC Solar Now. The Jacksons are the first in Sampson County to obtain a residential permit for solar.
NC Solar Now installed a ground mounted system, which consists of 22 260-watt panels, making it a 5.72 kW system. The solar array is hooked up to the house to help offset the large electric bill the Jacksons have each month. Their house was built as a passive solar house, which collects heat in the winter and rejects it in the summer. However, despite that, the Jacksons pay about $500 a month in electric each month with the house and the various other buildings on the farm.
The Jacksons will have net metering with Duke Energy, which means they will be able to use the power their system produces and get credits on their electric bill for the excess they produce.
With the cost of solar going down and the price of electricity going up, the Jacksons took note of NC Solar Now’s slogan, ‘Save More than Just the Planet.’ With a federal tax credit of 30 percent and state tax credit of 35 percent, the time was right for the Jacksons to go solar. The Jacksons will generate approximately 800 kWh of electricity per month, which should save them about $90-100 per month.
Tom Jackson hopes that his neighbors will see his solar array and follow suit. “When you can make conservation measures economically positive for people, I think that’s an elegant solution for an increasing problem,” he said. “We are running out of some resources.”
The Jacksons will be hosting an open house on Saturday, July 26, 2014, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at 13902 Dunn Road, Godwin. Representatives from NC Solar Now will be available to answer questions about the system.
