NC Solar Now installs 15.5 kW solar array on the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC.

The 50-panel roof mounted array was purchased by approximately 50 of the church’s congregants. West Raleigh Presbyterian Church Trustee Eric Baucom said the idea for solar came from two church members who had already had solar installed on their own homes. The church established a six-person solar committee to oversee the entire project.

“As solar energy continues to grow in North Carolina, more organizations are seeing the value in investing in solar,” said NC Solar Now Director of Sales Gregory Olenar. “No matter what happens, the sun will always be one of the best investments anyone can make.”

Baucom said, “Our mission is to be a good steward to the Earth and getting solar is a big step in that direction.” He added that the feedback on the solar installation has been very positive and except for the benefit of saving money, the impetus for going green was to “help erase their carbon footprint” on their 38,000 square foot building.

wrpc2NC Solar Now has seen a steady rise in its commercial installations. “We are so impressed how church members came together to find the best solution to make this happen,” said NC Solar Now President Steve Nicolas. “We are proud to be associated with this church and happy to help them go solar.”

The church acts as a nonprofit and therefore is not eligible for any of the renewable energy tax credits. However, since the church’s congregants paid for the cost of the installation and it was completed before the end of 2015, each individual who contributed will be eligible for both the state tax credit, which is 35 percent plus their normal federal tax deduction. North Carolina recently voted to end the 35 percent state tax incentive for solar energy; however, the federal tax incentive was extended until 2022.

“Thanks to NC Solar Now getting our installation completed in a timely manner, we were able to get our solar system turned on in time for the New Year. We’re very happy with the whole process and NC Solar Now was a great partner,” said Baucom.
